Jägermeister is Germany's most famous herbal liqueur, produced in Wolfenbüttel since 1934 using a closed recipe of 56 botanicals—roots, herbs, blossoms, bark, and citrus peel sourced from around the world. Each batch is macerated, blended, and matured for roughly a year in oak before bottling at 35% ABV, a process the Mast-Jägermeister house has refined without meaningful change for nearly a century.
The aroma is unmistakable: anise, licorice root, star anise, bitter orange peel, ginger, and cardamom layered over a cool, resinous base. On the palate, expect a sweet-bitter interplay that opens with caramel and menthol, moves through warming baking spices, and finishes with a clean, herbaceous bite. Served ice-cold—ideally from the freezer at around -18°C—Jäger drinks remarkably smooth and loses none of its aromatic complexity.
Traditionally taken as a chilled shot, Jägermeister is also the backbone of the Jägerbomb and works beautifully in modern cocktails alongside citrus, ginger beer, cold brew, or apple cider. It pairs especially well after a heavy meal, which is exactly what the original recipe was designed for.
